Nairy Baghramian at Munster Sculpture Project 07

Nairy Baghramian’s contribution to the Munster Sculpture Project was a little disappointing.

The first glance across the street was definitely off-putting. The piece was not exactly easy to get to and the visitor felt a bit short-changed. Crossing the very busy intersection to reach the work did little to assuage the art tourists’ efforts. But wait a minute, look at it more closely. It is not just a few daggy screens sprayed with graffiti; no, now we realise what it’s all about. What we thought was a roadwork at the busy intersection is actually the sculptural project. My goodness, how original; I wonder if anyone else has thought of using something that is “already made” as a “work of art”?

Or, if the roadwork is not part of Baghramian’s contribution, then why does it look so much better?
